At yesterday morning’s Worship Gathering, Matt McClure taught on the passage in John 4 where our church gets its name: h2o. His talk was geared toward all the incoming freshmen but could be applied to anyone in any major season-of-life transition. His leading question that every freshmen will most likely ask themselves at some point in their first encounter with university life was:

“How am I going to do this?”

Through the encounter of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, we learn two truths:

Jesus pursued the woman

She was radically changed

Matt gave a vision to the freshmen for their college experience. What if:

You met Jesus in a real way

He radically changed your life?

“A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink.’… The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?’ (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans)” (John 4v7,9 ESV).

Another thing to note concerning Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well is that he breaks all sorts of cultural boundaries and religious rules in order to rescue her. This woman at the well:

is a Samaritan

is a woman

has junk in her life

As the text indicates Jews and Samaritans were religious enemies due to some theological differences on worship. Also, women in that culture were of lesser value than men, so a Jewish man would most certainly not associate with an unknown Samaritan woman.

Finally, as the text later reads, Jesus reveals that this woman has had five husbands and is currently living in adultery. She implicitly has been running from man to man (as supposed to being a five-fold widow) and it seems unlikely that her life is ironed out. Yet Jesus pursues her in intentional conversation and she later becomes a missionary to her hometown, telling those there of her interaction with the Messiah. This reality reflects our interaction with Jesus today:

He will passionately and relentlessly pursue you.

A woman’s regular and ordinary trip to fetch water turned into an extraordinary encounter with Christ and a living water. What if that were true for you?

Students:
What if you were in college to not just get a degree
What if you were in college to encounter God in new and powerful ways?

“Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, “Give me a drink,” you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water’” (John 4v10 ESV).

If we only knew that we don’t have to be worried, angry, scared, or empty but that God can give us eternal life, fathomless joy, and living water.

Oh LORD, You are God. You reign in might and majesty from the depths of the sea to the limits of the sky. No matter where I look, You are there, and yet I can find myself far from You (though You are never far from me). You pursue me as Your beloved. Never giving up. Never backing down. You are patient and loving in Your correction and discipline. LORD, I desire to accept the trials You allow in my life in order that I may lean harder into You. Like the woman at the well, I have my share of junk in my life, but You only see Your Son in me, Your son.

I desire to be Your disciple, Jesus. I shall follow You upward, inward and outward through worship, community and service. I am sorry for when I ignore You (and I will). Would You continue to make Yourself real to me from my waking to lying down? Shine in me and through me. I am following You forever, through and into eternal life (guide me when I stray). You are the goodness in me. You are the holiness that I seek. I love You only with the love that You give me. Oh LORD, You are God and I am in awe.

Amen.

A couple of my friends here at Kent State have started a year-long campaign blending the areas of local and global social justice. It’s called 365 Days and, inspired by the one-for-one business model of TOMS Shoes, these girls will provide new shoes for those that need them both in Southwest and Northeast Ohio, as well as any number of the 23 countries hosting TOMS Shoe Drops. While they raise funds ($29,000), they’ll also be raising awareness by wearing one, and only one pair of TOMS Shoes for one year.

With the money they raise they’ll be able to buy 365 pairs of TOMS Shoes each to donate to Your Father’s Kitchen of Wilmington, Ohio and Urban Vision of Akron, Ohio. As well, as the TOMS motto goes, “with every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need,” each pair they buy will provide another pair of shoes in the TOMS network of Shoe Drops.

That’s a total of 1,460 pairs of shoes!

I’m happy to get the word out on this campaign as it not only gives help (shoes) to those that need it, but impacts both those locally and globally. Social justice can sometimes take a distant stage in Africa, South America or Asia and ignore the very same issues that are much closer. This cause does both.

If you’d like to help or donate to this project, call or email any of these friendly girls:
Rita Yoder: 937.725.5321 / ryoder9@kent.edu
Adrienne Langan 330.321.3040 / alangan1@kent.edu
Casey Sandala 724.787.8131 / csandala@kent.edu

You can find the 365 Days website here.

What are some non-profits or charities you know of that address global issues locally?

I’ve been listening to the latest worship album from Hillsong Live, God Is Able. The Hillsong team knows how to lead the church to easily worship. The song The Lost Are Found is especially powerful as it rounds to the bridge: “The lost are found, the blind will see, the lame will walk, the dead will live, and You our God, forever You will reign!” The crowd declares over and over the words of Jesus as he instructed John the Baptist’s disciples to “go and tell John what you hear and see” (Matt 11v4).

This song focuses on Jesus and the evidence of his Lordship. And yet we can do even more than read Jesus’ words, we can sing them. We can make music and raise our hands and gather together to edify and remind ourselves of the awesomeness of our Savior. Watch the video link below and hear the church worship.

Verse 1
Everlasting while earthly ages fade
In mercy our God Your kingdom reigns

Chorus 1
Lord over everything You are near
All of the universe at Your feet

Verse 2
In the Saviour injustice brought to right
For Your glory that Your Name be lifted high

Bridge
The lost are found
The blind will see
The lame will walk
The dead will live
And You our God forever You will reign

*I especially appreciate the choice the Hillsong Production made to darken the stage and musicians as the band played on and the crowd rejoined in singing the bridge themselves.

What’s your favorite declaration of truth in a worship song?

Lanyero lives in Koro, just outside of Gulu. She is married and has six children. In hopes of raising money to support her family, Lanyero grows and sells crops in town. She is a smart woman.

When she was young, Lanyero’s family didn’t have enough money to send her to school. And at the same time, the LRA insurgency was at its height, making it nearly impossible for children in her village to travel safely to and from school. As a result, Lanyero was never able to learn to read or write.

When Invisible Children came to her village and started the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) program, Lanyero was one of the first to sign up. She recognized the power of saving and loaning money as a group and has experienced the benefits of being a member first-hand.

This year, when Invisible Children introduced the Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) program, Lanyero readily joined. When we met up with her recently, we found Lanyero and the other members of her FAL group finishing up the alphabet. They were learning how to recognize and write the letters t, u, v, and w.

Out of all of the benefits of learning how to read and write, Lanyero is most excited to learn how to write and sign her name – she currently uses an x or her thumbprint as her signature. She’s also looking forward to running her business more efficiently and being able to help her children with their homework.

A big congrats to Lanyero and all of the other members of our Functional Adult Literacy groups! Your hard work will soon pay off!

Is there an eternal perspective for art? music? literature? creation?

[from relevantmagazine.com]
by Kenyon Adams

Each year hundreds of artists make the move to a major city to pursue their ambitions in the arts. This opens the door to a lot of unsolicited advice: “Be sure to have something else to fall back on.” “Give yourself a time limit after which point you should move on to something else.” “Beware of losing your morals in the theater.”

But rarely will you hear someone say: “Moving to New York? Get ready for a spiritual awakening!” or, “Hey, you should check out this great church there!” Can you imagine if the churches in New York City or Los Angeles or Chicago became so engaged with artists in the city that being an artist there was inextricably tied to questions of faith and calling?

On a crisp, autumn morning this November, I met in the loft space of the Neighborhood Church in the village. Sitting around a breakfast table with artists and pastors from various churches in the city, we talked about how to serve the growing number of artists in our congregations and communities. One pastor wept as he testified to God’s faithfulness in making a place again for artists in the church, and explained that he himself had once been an aspiring painter but quit after he became a Christian. At that time, there was no one to help him integrate his faith and his work as an artist.

That morning over breakfast we recounted the names of early contributors to art and faith dialogue: Francis Schaffer, Madeline L’Engle, Hans Rookmaker, Calvin Seerfeld, Colin Harbinson, Nigel Goodwin and many others who helped to build a bridge theologically and relationally for artists to find a home among Protestant, evangelical churches. We sat together in awe of those who came before us and prayed for the reconciliation of artists and the church. The rapidly growing number of artists in the churches of major cities and the lay leaders equipped to serve them gives hope to the vision of Gospel renewal in and through the arts.

The Church has a unique message of hope for the artist. Through the hope of the Gospel we understand that our artistic work, not just our bodies and souls, could one day be purified and included in the new, eternal city of God. This belief in the eternal significance of our earthly work and bodily life gives the people of God a unique opportunity to speak into the hearts of artists about the one topic that concerns them most—the issue of calling.

Artists, like all people, want their lives to matter. Their work is an expression of their life. Even in an era in which a sense of hopelessness and meaninglessness tends to pervade much artistic expression, I contend that all artists sense or long for an eternal significance in their life and work. One doesn’t have to look far beneath the surface of many contemporary artworks to find this resonant longing. Perhaps the artist’s struggle to make sense of a world that seems caught between the dreaming and the coming true is one way in which the Spirit is working to renew the frayed fabric of culture.

It is truly a unique time in which the Church could play a major role in the shaping of many artists through their relationships and experiences in the evangelical churches of major cities, the cultural centers of the world. The intentional inclusion and care of artists that is becoming commonplace in churches around the globe is laying the foundation for a movement of the Gospel in the arts community through a network of churches that will engage, equip and mobilize artists with a renewed sense of their callings. Let’s pray for the artists that God will bring, and the churches that will receive them.
